Research Diet and Test Meal Development

The Bionutritionist is able to develop menus to meet the unique nutritional needs of study protocols. Nutrient composition of research diets and test meals are calculated using ProNutra software, a program designed specifically for Metabolic Kitchens that includes food production features to facilitate meal preparation and the ability to customize the foods and nutrients in the database for specific research studies

Dietetic Intern presenting a case study to Bionutrition staff.
Bionutrition offers a one-week, elective rotation for the UIHC Dietetic Internship Program during Winter Semester. Students who select this rotation are exposed to the functions of a research dietitian and the workings of a metabolic kitchen.
The rotation consists of several required assignments giving an overview of the Clinical and Translational Science Award and the Clinical Research Unit, and covering the rudiments of developing and providing controlled diets for feeding studies.
The bionutritionist can help design and implement the nutrition assessment and dietary counseling portions of your protocol. Our bionutritionist is nationally registered and state licensed to provide standard medical nutrition therapy. Counseling experiences from recent protocols have addressed weight loss, diabetes care (including the constant carbohydrate diet), and constipation.
Body composition and metabolic rate assessment is available from Bionutrition and other ICTS Core Laboratory Services. The Bionutrition Manager can assist you in selecting the appropriate tools for your protocol.
