Clinical Research Unit (CRU)

The CRU of the University of Iowa ICTS provides the infrastructure and personnel necessary to perform both inpatient and outpatient clinical and translational research. The facility provides:

  • 24-hour-per-day nursing staff dedicated to inpatient and outpatient services on-site, as well as an associated Flexible nursing service that aids investigators in seeing off-unit research participants.
  • ICTS core lab support, featuring analytical laboratory, bionutrition, imaging, cardiovascular physiology, and pulmonary physiology services.
  • Oral and craniofacial research services.

The CRU participant-interaction unit features inpatient rooms, outpatient exam rooms, consult rooms, procedure rooms, as well as a protocol staff work area with computers, printers, and individual carrels. The CRU unit supports investigators by providing nursing care through the life span, in addition to specific protocol task requirements. CRU personnel can assist in study design and research activity coordination, and aid in many tasks associated with research activity, such as participant scheduling, gathering of patient information, monitoring of vital signs, and collection and basic processing of biologic samples.
