Outpatient Services

The outpatient unit of the CRU has 3 dedicated exam rooms and access to any of the 10 inpatient beds that are not being utilized. Outpatient services are available 24 hours a day every day with the exception of 2 weekends per month. CRU staff consists of 8 full time nurses, 1 70% time nurse, a nurse manager, 2 clinical technicians, 1 laboratory technician and 1 clerk.


CRU staff participate in a wide range of studies and see research participants with a myriad of diagnoses. They have the experience and capabilities to adapt to a wide variety of protocols and procedures.


Methodologies available to investigators:

  • Development of orders and data collection forms
  • Assistance in obtaining demographic information
  • Obtaining vital signs and EKG
  • Obtaining blood, urine and stool samples
  • Initial evaluation and ongoing monitoring
  • Placement of intravenous lines
  • Administration of investigational agents
  • post-procedural, post-conscious sedation
  • Nursing care for adult and pediatric research participants
  • Gathering and recording study data
  • Coordinating discharge and follow-up
  • Coordinating with hospital staff about research
  • Other research procedures
  • Processing, storing and shipping of samples
  • Monitoring and reporting adverse events
  • research participant questions about studies

The CRU outpatient unit is located on the 3rd floor of General Hospital just outside of elevator C.

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

The CRU also has an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) available Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings to assist with study protocols. An ARNP is a registered nurse with specialized advanced education and clinical competency to practice autonomously and in collaboration with other health care professionals to diagnose, treat and manage a patient's health problems. They may also be involved in research and education. Nurse practitioners practice under the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state in which they work and are nationally certified in their specialty area. The CRU ARNP will be available to help investigators by:


  • Obtaining medical histories
  • Performing medical exams
  • Assisting with staff education needs
