UMC 2010: Rural Health and Health Disparities Research in the Heartland.

The Midwest Consortium (MC) for education and research collaboration began in 2006 with three Roadmap K12 institutions (Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin-Madison) initiating annual meetings. This successful consortium continued over four subsequent years, with the most recent meeting at the University of Iowa in June 2009. The consortium expanded as other institutions were funded under the CTSA and IDeA mechanisms. The annual meetings were devoted to enhancing scientific research education and collaboration for K12 and KL2 scholars. The MC provides a unique opportunity for scholars, mentors and program leadership to focus on addressing specific challenges and opportunities in conducting research in the Midwest. In this application, we seek to continue and expand this successful collaboration by adding new institutions in the Midwestern United States and expanding the annual event to a continuing education model for clinical/translational education and research collaboration.

Objectives

  • Enhance training and career development of clinical and translational researchers by sharing and developing regional approaches to:
    • Research training and career development support
    • Mentor training
    • Web-based courses and training modules to address regional needs
    • d. Provide a forum to enable regional collaborations
  • Enhance clinical and translational research to address specific populations by:
    • Sharing of best practices
    • Fostering collaboration
    • Supporting multidisciplinary research
    • Identifying and encouraging shared resources such as core facilities and special populations
  • Support objectives 1 and 2 with an annual consortium of faculty investigators and scholars in training
  • Develop a continuous process of shared training and research collaborations between the annual meetings
  • Engage NCRR IDeA institutions and schools in addition to CTSA and K12 centers
