Presentation: Tips and Tricks for Using Epic in Research

There are ways to make Epic work for you when you are conducting research. The ICTS has invited Doug Van Daele, MD, to present at our upcoming Clinical Lecture Series. Dr. Van Daele was recently named Chief Medical Information Officer for UI Health Care and, as such, is responsible for supporting the development of clinical information systems that promote high quality patient care. He is also a member of the Steering Committee for the UIHC Epic Project and has been an integral part of bringing Epic to UIHC.

Visiting Lecturer

Lainie Ross, MD, PhD, Carolyn and Matthew Bucksbaum Professor of Clinical Ethics and Associate Director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago will be a visiting professor next week. She has written extensively on organ transplant, genetic testing and public policy. More recently, she has been working on ethical issues involved in community-based research. She will be delivering the presentation: 360 Degrees of Human Subjects Protections in Collaborative Community Engagement Research from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Thursday, October 8, 2009 in Seebohm Conference Room, 283 EMRB.

Pulmonary Testing in Pediatric and Adult Research

The ICTS has invited Sue Hanken, Respiratory Care Manager in Pulmonary Diagnostics/Hyperbaric Medicine, to present on the use of pulmonary testing in pediatric and adult research. Pulmonary Diagnostics and Intervention, located on 3 PFP, is a Respiratory Therapy directed clinic which offers a full range of pulmonary tests. Complete pulmonary function testing is provided and arterial blood gas analyses, including pulmonary physician interpretation, are also performed. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing with gas exchange is available with the assistance of a pulmonologist. Bronchoscopy, interventional bronchoscopic, and pleural procedures are performed by pulmonologists in the two bronchoscopy suites with or without the assistance of mobile anesthesia.

Background and Ethics Informational Meeting

Jeff Murray, MD, Professor of Neonatology and Genetics, will be giving a presentation on Genetics Research – Background and Ethics for the upcoming ICTS Informational Meeting. Dr. Murray’s research interests include using genetics, genomics and epidemiology to study birth defects and prematurity. He is interested in identifying the genetic and environmental predisposing factors to prematurity and its complications. Other projects include strategies to identify and characterize genes involved in several inherited human disorders with a major emphasis on cleft lip and palate.

How to do Research Involving MR and PET Imaging

The ICTS has invited Vince Magnotta, PhD and Laurie Ponto, PhD to discuss how to do research involving MR and PET imaging. The MR Research Facility and PET Imaging Center are great tools for investigators using MR and PET in their research. The UI MR Research Facility was started in 2004 and is run as a Core University facility. Use of the facility is based on the approval of the Research Advisory committee. The equipment managed by the MRRF includes 2 research dedicated scanners, 1 shared scanner and several computer systems available for research. The University of Iowa PET Imaging Center is a self contained laboratory encompassing 5500 square feet for production of radionuclides, synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals, quantitative PET scanning and analysis of PET imaging data.

Merging of the Clinical Trials Office and Department of Sponsored Programs

Wendy Beaver from the Division of Sponsored Programs will be giving a presentation on what the consolidation of the Clinical Trials Office with the DSP will mean for research grants and contracts. The changes are expected to bring consistency to the sponsored project routing procedure, so that clinical trial proposals and agreements will follow the same procedure applied to all other sponsored projects.


The presentation will be July 27th at noon in the 7th floor Atrium Dining Room (7227 RCP).

Investigational Drug Service Informational Meeting

Study Drugs

Kris Johnson, PharmD and Joanna Nohr, PharmD will be presenting information on the Investigational Drug Service July 23rd 2009. The Investigational Drug Service can store, dispense, label and distribute study medications. The IDS must be used for all research involving inpatient medication studies and for outpatient medication studies that involve non-FDA approved medications. Kris and Joanna will discuss the policies of and services offered by the IDS and answer any questions from research professionals.

UIHC Offers SAS Presentation April 29


University of Iowa Health Care will sponsor a presentation titled "Sample Size Calculations: Using SAS PROC POWER and GLMPOWER" on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, from 3:00-4:30 PM in 2117 of the Medical Education & Biomedical Research Facility (MERF).
